How Do Students REALLY feel about Valentines Day?

RICHMOND, Va. – Dealing with Valentine’s Day is a lot like a box of chocolates: You never know what you’re going to get.

And like a certain piece of chocolate, you either love or hate this holiday that, according to sources, has existed since 496 A.D.

Such sentiment rings true among several VCU students who admitted to not knowing much about the holiday’s origin, or even caring.

“I have no idea where this holiday comes from, something about St. Valentine,” said Jason Hollandsworth, 22, a student at Virginia Commonwealth University. “It’s just any other day to me.”

Steven Chun, another VCU student, in his 20’s, agrees.
“I don’t have any feelings for Valentines Day; I’ll probably be sleeping on that day,”

Even though some may resent this day, people do cherish this holiday and like surrounding themselves with loved ones. But shouldn’t Valentines Day be year around?

I took the question off campus and asked a student attending Christopher Newport University.

“If you love someone you should show them that you love them every single day, there shouldn’t be just one day,” said Esther Remington, 20, a student at CNU. “Like that day can be overly romantic but if you love someone you should be romantic to them everyday.”

So, what happens if you don’t have someone to love you and love you back on Valentine’s Day?

For most, the answers vary.

“I think that the reason people resent it is because they’re single and it’s a day that supposed to remind them that ‘Oh I’m alone,’…Everyone’s alone at some point in time just because its Valentines Day doesn’t mean that you should be depressed,” said Angela Gulati, 22, student at VCU.

Valentines Day is a day that is to be celebrated by all, not just couples. There are often many events that are offered to singles. Several Richmond-area restaurants will host singles’ night for people seeking a special Valentine or simply looking for fun.

Yet, hanging out with friends may not be everyone’s idea of fun. Some Students believe that relatives shouldn’t be forgotten on Cupids Day.

“Family and friends should be included when it comes to Valentines Day,” said Jason Hollandsworth. “I have more love for my family and friends than I ever did for any girl that I dated.”
